An engagement heatmap is a visual representation of attention across the length of a piece of content, colour-coding each section from high engagement to disengagement hotspot.
What it is
The horizontal axis is content position — slides, sections, or timeline for video. Colour encodes the aggregate engagement index at that position across all learners.
The value is in the variance rather than the absolute values. A uniformly warm heatmap tells you little; a sharp cold band at one position is a diagnosis.
Why it matters
It converts an abstract measurement into something an instructional designer can act on directly. Most people can read a heatmap without training, which matters more than it sounds when you are trying to get content teams to use engagement data.
A common confusion
A heatmap shows where attention went, not why it went. Pair it with replay data to distinguish confusion from boredom before deciding on a fix.
