In short

iMotions is a lab-grade biometric research platform running roughly $7,500–25,000 per seat per year, built for academic and commercial researchers combining eye tracking, EEG, GSR and facial coding. Emotuit is a browser-based SDK for content-level engagement analytics in training and e-learning, with a behavioural-only mode that is deployable in EU workplace and education settings.

The regulatory difference

Since February 2025, EU AI Act Article 5(1)(f) has prohibited AI systems that infer emotions from biometric data in workplaces and education institutions. Penalties reach 7% of global turnover, and there is no consent exception.

That applies to any facial emotion analysis tool deployed in those contexts — iMotions, Affectiva, MorphCast, and Emotuit's own Learn configuration. It is not a competitive claim; it is a constraint on the whole category.

Where we differ is that we built for it. Emotuit Signals measures engagement from behavioural telemetry alone — tab-switching, window focus, dwell time, scroll depth, interaction latency. No camera. No biometric data. No emotional inference anywhere in the pipeline. That places it outside the prohibition.

The evidence says this costs less than you would expect. A 2024 study found tab-switching to be the single strongest predictor of disengagement in online courses, ahead of self-regulation and satisfaction measures. Adding facial expression to behavioural signals improves classification accuracy from roughly 91.5% to 94.6% — about three percentage points, carrying all of the regulatory exposure.

If you are evaluating for EU corporate training

The question to put to every vendor on your shortlist, including us, is: does your engagement score require a camera? If yes, you need their written Article 5(1)(f) position for your specific deployment before you go further. Work through the test here.

The honest summary

iMotions is a research platform. Emotuit is a content analytics tool. They overlap on facial coding and diverge on almost everything else.

If you are running studies, buy iMotions. If you are trying to work out which twelve minutes of your forty-minute compliance module people stop attending to — and you need that to be lawful for EU staff — that is what we built.

If you are not sure which category you are in, tell us what you are trying to find out and we will say honestly whether we are the right fit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Emotuit a direct replacement for iMotions?
No, and it would be misleading to say otherwise. If you need multi-modal biometric research — eye tracking synchronised with EEG and GSR, stimulus presentation, lab study design — iMotions does things Emotuit does not attempt. Emotuit replaces it only for the narrower use case of measuring which parts of digital content lose people.
How much does iMotions cost?
Publicly discussed figures put academic tiers around $7,500 per year and commercial licences around $25,000 per seat per year, with enterprise pricing negotiated. Pricing is not published, so treat those as indicative and get a current quote.
Can iMotions be used for corporate training analytics in the EU?
Facial expression analysis that infers emotional states is prohibited in EU workplace and education contexts under AI Act Article 5(1)(f), regardless of which vendor supplies it. That constraint applies to any emotion-inference tool including ours, which is why we built a behavioural-only mode. Take your own legal advice.
What about academic research use?
For genuine research, iMotions is usually the better tool. It has deep academic adoption, a substantial published validation record, and multi-modal synchronisation that a browser SDK cannot match. We would rather tell you that than lose your trust on the first call.
